Paving the way to a sustainable future

We are proud to contribute to the transformative Eastern Busway project in East Auckland. With sustainability at the heart of our operations, our involvement in this major infrastructure development highlights the vital role steel plays in creating a sustainable future for New Zealand. Projects like the Eastern Busway rely on steel’s strength and durability to ensure long-lasting, resilient structures, reinforcing its essential role in the growth and development of our nation's infrastructure.

Project Background

The Eastern Busway project is poised to transform the public transport network, linking Panmure, Pakūranga, and Botany, with an expected capacity to support over 5 million trips annually. Stretching 600 metres—six times the length of Eden Park’s rugby field—and spanning 18 meters in width—the size of an Olympic pool—this major infrastructure project will feature a 40-metre-long span over Tī Rākau Drive. With 24 foundation piles and 2,500 tonnes of reinforcing and pre-stressing steel, the Eastern Busway aims to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce the region’s carbon footprint, and promote more sustainable commuting options.

Key project highlights include:

  • Traffic Reduction: Aiming to decrease traffic by up to 40% during peak hours on Pakūranga Road and Tī Rākau Drive near Pakūranga Town Centre.
  • Cultural Integration: Incorporating elements of te ao Māori and sustainable design, such as the innovative reuse of stormwater runoff, along with bespoke mahi toi (artwork) to weave cultural significance into the project.
  • Economic Vitality: Enhancing East Auckland's economic growth and sustainability by improving transport connections and access.
  • Safety & Reliability: Boosting overall road safety, improving traffic flow, and providing a reliable, frequent new busway service for east Auckland.

This infrastructure development is vital for meeting the needs of urban growth while minimising its environmental impact. The project is being delivered by an alliance of Auckland Transport with Fletcher Construction, ACCIONA, AECOM and Jacobs in partnership with mana whenua.

Our Partnership with Fletcher Reinforcing

Pacific Steel is proud to partner with Fletcher Reinforcing in supplying nearly 2,000 tons of high-quality, locally produced reinforcing steel for the Eastern Busway construction. This rigorously tested steel not only meets New Zealand's strict reinforcing standards but also contributes to environmental sustainability, thanks to its exceptional durability.

Fletcher Steel has long been a trusted partner of Pacific Steel and our sister company, New Zealand Steel. Together, we are leading the charge in New Zealand's largest decarbonisation initiative, which aims to reduce up to 1,000,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. This significant achievement is driven by a major investment in a new Electric Arc Furnace, which is helping pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future.

Community Impact: Steel at the Heart of Sustainability

The Eastern Busway project is more than just a key infrastructure milestone; it is a crucial step toward sustainable urban growth. By enhancing public transport options, it reduces the community’s reliance on cars, leading to a significant decrease in carbon emissions.

The project supports local industries and creates employment opportunities, underscoring the team’s dedication to community wellbeing and economic development. Through this initiative, the alliance is helping to build a more sustainable future and strengthening the fabric of the communities in East Auckland.
